It sounds strange and wonderful, but the body really doesn't care. To the body, energy is energy. It takes whatever it becomes, and doesn't really know that some foods are more fit than others. It is a little like a garbage disposal : it takes what you put down it, whether it should go down or not.

So let's apply this to the body, and to gains in weight. When the body receives a calorie - which, as we all know, is just a label for energy - it must do something with that energy.

The same applies for five hundred calories from a ( small ) tub of ice cream : those five hundred calories need to be dealt with.
That is, it will either convert the energy ( calories ) into cells/tissue, or it'll use that energy ( calories ) to break down cells.

Now the linkage between calories/energy, metabolism, and weight loss becomes rather clear and direct.

When there's a surplus of energy, and the body can't use this energy to deal with any wishes at the time, it is going to be forced to create cells with that additional energy. It has got to.

it doesn't necessarily wish to, but after understanding that the energy can't be used to do anything ( such as help you exercise or digest some food ), it must change it into cells thru anabolism.

And what are those extra cells? Yup, you got it : added weight!

in brief the whole calorie/metabolism/weight gain thing is actually nearly excess energy. When there are too many calories in the body - that is, when there's too much energy from food - then the body transforms those calories into stuff.
And that stuff, most of the time, is fat. Often, of course, those additional calories are changed into muscle ; and this is usually a nice thing for those watching their weight or attempting to maintain a perfect body fat proportion.
in fact , because muscles require calories to maintain, folk with robust muscle tone burn extra daily calories without essentially doing anything ; their metabolism burns it for them.
This is the most important reason why exercising and building lean muscle is a part of an overall program to boost your metabolism ; because the more lean muscle you have, the more places excess calories can go to be burned up before they're turned into fat.
